This large (approx. 13.5″ x 16.5″) and ornate document is Alois Betz’s honorable discharge from the 3rd Chevaliers Regiment Duke Maximilian, 4th Division, Royal Bavarian Army. In the box on the left Alois’ physical characteristics are listed, followed by his signature “in his own hand.” Under the royal seal of Bavaria at center is text describing his trade of woodworker, his term of service and some boilerplate text about the excellence of that service and the requirement to remain available to the militia, or Landwehr if they should need him.
According to a recruitment law passed in the late 1820’s every Bavarian male was required to enlist in the royal army at age 21, Alois’ age in 1849, and serve for six years. Due to budget constraints the actual term of active duty was usually much less. The document states that Alois entered the army on March 6th of 1849 and served until the date of discharge, March 5th of 1855. It further states that he served a total of three years, five months and ten days active duty, which was more than twice the average active duty term of 14 months for recruits at the time. The order of discharge was signed in Dillingen by “Graf von Spreti, Oberst.” The von Spretis are an aristocratic Bavarian family that has contributed more than a few male members to the military, but we have not be able to identify which one this was. A fairly complete transcription and a much less complete translation follow the images.
