A letter of reference written by the district court of Kipfenberg in April of 1855, and signed by the district judge. A fairly accurate transcription follows the image. Only a very rough translation has been attempted, but the letter generally states that Alois Betz is a bachelor who wants to emigrate to North America, and that the court sees no reason why he shouldn’t, provided that he understands his severance from Bavaria will not be completed until he returns proof of naturalization in America to the court. It’s likely that Alois would have needed to present this letter to the royal government along with his other documents in order to receive his final pass to exit the kingdom. According to the revenue stamp at the top it cost him 15 kreutzer to obtain.

Dem ledigen Alois Betz von Engering, welcher
nach Nord Amerika auswandern will, wird
hiemit nach Erfullung sämmtlicher Vorbeding-
ungen von Seite der unterfertigten königl
bayrischen distriktspolizeibehörde bestätigt,
daß dessen Vorhaben, nach Nordamerika aus-
zuwandern und Dortselbst die Eigenschaft eines
nordamerikanischen Unterthans zu erwerben,
ein Hinderniß nicht im Wege stehe, daß je-
doch die förmliche Entlassung aus dem bairischen
Unterthansverband erst alsdann eintritt,
wenn der Nachweis uber die erlangte Natur-
alisation erbracht sein werde.
