Document #9 – Neracher-Fischer marriage license, 1851

This is a local permit to marry, issued to Franz Joseph Neracher and Katherina Fischer by the town council of Wettingen, county Baden, in the Swiss Canton of Aargau, August 24th of 1851. The place and year of birth for Franz Joseph are given as Wettingen, 1818. The reason for our possession of this document is the marriage of Alois and Rosina’s second son, Alois Louis Betz, to Catherine Neracher. Catherine’s father was Adolph Neracher, born 1844 in Germany according to the 1910 census. The connection between Adolph and Franz Joseph is unclear, but at least we have a pretty good idea that Franz emigrated to the U.S., lived in Cuyahoga county, and is buried in St. John Cemetery, the same cemetery where we believe Alois and Rosina were interred.

  1. Hello! I have been researching the Neracher side of my ancestry. I came upon your site while researching. Franz Joseph is Adolph’s father, so he is Catherine “Neracher” Betz’s grandfather. It is interesting that findagrave.com has Franz’s name as Frank. Also, on Ancestry, Adolph is listed as Adollphus. I’m assuming he either went by that as a nickname or he changed it after moving to the US. It says that he was born in Bern, Switzerland. I also found that Franz got remarried the same year that Katherina had died (1868). I am assuming this is why the document was handed down to one of the children. The ancestor that I am related to is Adolph’s oldest sibling and sister, Olive. So Adolph is my great uncle x3 and Franz is my great grandfather x4. Your story has intrigued me into looking into this further. It is very awesome to see this document that documents their marriage. How exciting! I do see that you have not updated in a year. I am not sure if you are still active on here. Thank you so much for uploading these documents even when they don’t directly relate to your family. You never know whose family you may be impacting and gifting them with information. This is great! Thank you!

  2. Thanks Jaclyn. Sorry it took so long to approve this comment. I don’t maintain this blog as actively as I used to. It’s nice to see that someone found value in the document scans. It’s been a few years since I read through my notes but I believe that my great-grandmother Lena Schneider’s mother’s maiden name was Neracher. She married my great-grandfather Edward R. Betz, who was born in Cleveland and resided in Conneaught, OH.
